Honorary Diplomas

Required

About the Honorary Diploma

The Atlanta Board of Education awards honorary diplomas to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to education, the community, or a particular field. These honorary diplomas reflect achievements that embody the values, mission, and goals of Atlanta Public Schools (APS). This application establishes a fair and consistent process for awarding honorary diplomas, ensuring alignment with the district's mission. By honoring these individuals, APS not only celebrates their accomplishments but also inspires future generations to strive for positive societal impact.

Please note the following important limitations of the honorary diploma:

  • The honorary diploma is ceremonial in nature
  • It does not substitute for a high school diploma issued under Georgia graduation requirements
  • It does not confer academic credit or eligibility for postsecondary admissions

Individuals seeking to complete a high school credential should be referred to adult education or GED programs offered through the district or local partners.

Before You Apply — Eligibility Requirements

Please review the following requirements before submitting an application. All criteria must be met for the application to be considered.

  • Candidate must have attended, but not graduated from, an APS high school
  • Candidate must not be a current APS faculty, staff, or Board of Education member
  • Former APS faculty, staff, or Board members must have been out of active service for at least three (3) years
  • Candidate must be living and able to accept the diploma at the graduation ceremony, unless a posthumous exception applies

If the candidate does not meet all of the above requirements, please do not submit an application.

Eligibility Criteria

General Eligibility
